NARFE MEMBERS ARE LEADERS IN FUNDING ALZHEIMER DISEASE RESEARCH - By Linda L. Braswell
Our organization of National Active and Retired Federal Employees is celebrating another milestone in 2010---the 25’th anniversary of the partnership between NARFE and the Alzheimer’s Association to support research into Alzheimer’s disease. NARFE members have contributed money since 1985, mostly through small personal donations, to support research into the cause, prevention and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders. As of November 30, 2009, your contributions totaled $8,376,269, -----100% of which goes to Alzheimer’s research.
NARFE is the largest organizational contributor to research for this disease, and some of the most important Alzheimer’s disease discoveries have issued from NARFE-supported research. The NARFE-Alzheimer’s National Committee Chairman Barb L. Pretzer reported in the December 2009 issue of our NARFE magazine that two exciting research studies completed early in this decade, which promote some breakthroughs in Alzheimer’s research, were NARFE-sponsored projects. The featured speaker on Alzheimer’s disease research at the NARFE 2004 National Convention in Reno, Nevada told me after his presentation that NARFE funding was vital to the work that he and his team were doing, as the really huge research grants were available only to giant institutions like NIH. As this dedicated scientist spoke excitedly of his team’s progress in their work, I experienced such a feeling of tremendous pride in the altruism and generosity of individual NARFE members and Chapters who have given their time, talents and money through individual donations and fundraisers to support research projects like those of this very grateful researcher.
A goal of reaching the $9 Million dollar mark in donations for Alzheimer’s research funds has been set by NARFE headquarters for 2011, and NARFE Chapter 717 can help to reach that goal. Your Executive Board voted to split the proceeds of our Annual Auction, to be held at the April 15, 2010 meeting, between FEAA (Federal Employee Education and Assistance Fund) and the NARFE Alzheimer’s Research Fund. In the past, proceeds of our Annual Auction remained with the Chapter. This year, the proceeds are being donated to charity. With the help of your donated items and purchases at the Auction, Chapter 717 members can support these worthy charities. Past President Lou Spataro is the Chair of our Chapter Alzheimer’s Fund Committee. We can all be proud of the actions and accomplishments of NARFE members in their devotion to eradicating this disease. |

SAVE YOUR TREASURES!
The spring Auction will be held at our regular NARFE meeting at Pelican Pointe Golf & Country Club on April 15, 2010. Please save your treasures and bring them on the DAY of the meeting at 11:00 a.m. so the committee can sort and allow time for members to preview our items. DO NOT BRING YOUR TREASURES UNTIL THE DAY OF THE AUCTION. While awaiting the meal to start you can relax with a cup of coffee or social drink and get to know your fellow NARFE members. Remember, this is a fund raiser for Alzheimer Research, and the Federal Employees Education and Assistance Fund (FEEA) so please be generous with donated items. Invite a neighbor or guest. For more information, please call Jean Marie Burton at 941-525-4264. |
